Press Release - Research & Innovation needs for Intermediate Bioenergy Carriers (IBCs)

MUSIC1 ( is an EU project that aims to facilitate market uptake of IBCs by developing feedstock mobilisation strategies, improved logistics and IBC trade centres.

With this press release the MUSIC consortium would like to inform stakeholders about the following studies performed during the first 18 months of the project:

All MUSIC reports are available at the Publications & Reports section of the project website:

The following research & innovation recommendations are highlighted for the IBCs investigated in the MUSIC project, namely pyrolysis oil, torrefied biomass and microbial oil.

  • Pyrolysis and torrefaction technology development enabling the use of lower quality and thus cheaper feedstock such as waste wood and agricultural residues
  • Technology development for the use of torrefied biomass in energy intensive industries
  • Demonstration projects establishing full value chains for torrefied biomass and pyrolysis oil in cooperation with technology providers and potential end users
  • Technology development targeting improved microbial oil production processes
  • Demonstration of microbial oil production and use at industrial facilities

Stakeholders are invited to regularly visit the MUSIC website to learn about project activities and recent results.
